Traywick Sippey Residence
Berkeley, CA
This is a residential condominium developed in an existing Masonic Temple building. The original space was the kitchen / dining hall and included a raised stage for chapter programs. The program for the development of the space called for a single family residential space that could accommodate a growing family and allowed for the expression and display of the gallerist client's strong interest in the visual arts.
Living areas are placed around a central open area for art display, art storage and entertaining. Large new windows surround the kitchen and dining areas and bring light deep into the interior space. Extensive seismic work was incorporated throughout and new decks off the dining room and master bedroom allow access to the outdoors. The entry hall for the temple building doubles as an exhibition space for the gallery and enlivens the overall experience.
The client has encouraged gallery artists to rethink their relationship to the architectural space. Throughout the year, art works are installed on walls, columns and ceilings. The creative integrations, as well as seeing children playing in the space, becomes strong evidence of the vitality of connecting art and life.
