Temple

Threlkeld Smith Residence

Berkeley, CA

A former Masonic Temple lodge room is transformed into a dynamic residential space. The design responds to the language of the fraternal order. Transparency replaces privacy. Stasis becomes movement. Closed becomes open. The contemporary transformation moves from the darkened space of communal ritual to an enlightened space for personal living.

The 40' x 60' volume with 16' ceilings, remains intact. Covered windows become large open light. The hierarchical platforms become rooms inserted. Fraternal performance becomes living performance. Internal walls become self-supporting, walls transmit light, doors/walls slide, curtains veil and a canopy floats. The warmth of common interest is replaced with radiant heating.

The homeowners interest and support of the arts become central to the design. Art, video and performance are integrated into the design. Freestanding walls become acoustic baffles. A custom media cabinet rolls away for a live performance space. A floating canopy becomes a sound reflector. A large film screen is rolled down for viewing. Video screens climb the wall. Veiled allegory becomes a curtained space for formal dining. Generous access to the exterior is by a new surrounding roof deck .
