Hillside Retreat
Studio
Oakland, CA
This hillside studio is designed as a creative retreat for painting, drawing and modelmaking. The studio takes it place on a grassy natural hillside on a deep residential lot. Transforming a natural site, the studio becomes an excercise in placemaking. The created landscape and the studio become dependent upon each other, creating a distinct enviroment deep in the lot. The studio entry is screened for privacy and a large raised vegetable garden is created along the arrival walk. The garden and landscape provides inspiration and motivation to the creativity in the studio.
Large sliding exterior panels provide protection and security. A large interior sliding window allows for generous light and a frame between the inside and the outside.
Existing foundations from extinct out buildings were used to site and define the project. A shed roof, matching the hillside slope, and simple interior construction using recycled materials, allow for an interior of variety in scale and usage. Rainwater is recycled from the shed roof to the garden.
