Underground

Buried / Connected Space

Portola Valley, CA

A underground space created by creatively using a planning code to its advantage. The site had restricted code requirements for size of accessory structures and limits on cubic yards of earth displaced. An area of the code that did not apply to was if the building was built underground. By utilzing this below grade space, a large garden area was left undisturbed, views able to remain and the visual impact to be negilible. The space created was the first phase of a project that allowed accessory buildings to be constructed above on the lower foundations.

Connected Space was a design concept explored for the project. Minimum connecting corridors were allowed between spaces that allowed the overall usage to expand threefold and be connected to each other. The space is accessed by a drive in door at one end under an access bridge and a rear exit access door. A required fire escape window was created into the sloping grade at the far end. Vehicle rated steel framed glass block was slotted into the grade above for natural lighting. Radiant heating slab was installed and an access stair down from a future accessory building above was installed.
